STITCHMEISTER DEMO

INTRO
Stitchmeister is written and compiled in GFA BASIC 2.0.
Stitchmeister is the first and only counted cross-stitch design
program for the Atari ST (that I know of). Stitchmeister operates
in low resolution, and converts Neochrome compatible graphics files
into photorealistic patterns for counted cross-stitch.
Stitchmeister works with both 16 color, and 16 grey level images.
Stitchmeister does not print color palette information, as the
color designations of the cross-stitch floss will vary by
manufacturer. Color matches can most easily be obtained by
comparing floss samples to the palette as it is displayed in
neochrome. The pattern designates the colors
0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,A,B,C,D,E,and F. These correspond directly
from left to right with the neochrome palette.
I have found the most success in using pictures that were
digitized in 16 (or 8) grey levels, and using 16 shades of the
same color floss. (ie. black, very dark blue,dark blue... light
blue, very light blue, white) With the appropriate shades of
brown, the effect of an old sepia-toned photograph can be
achieved.

Stitchmeister Demo is copyright 1990 by Bill Mills. You (the
user) are granted permission to use Stitchmeister Demo for
unlimited personal, nonprofit use. You are also granted
permission (and highly encouraged) to distribute unaltered copies
of SMEISTER.ARC, and or SMEISTER.PRG, so long as this file is
included. A complete version of Stitchmeister which includes
the option of saving a pattern as a text file for export to a word
processor, or desk top publisher, a color palette display,
patterns printed without the "NOT FOR SALE" message, as well as
license for commercial use is available for $25. (if you have a
video camera and digitizer, or scanner, a nice profit can be made
through local craft stores generating patterns from photographs of
grandchildren etc. at $5 or so a pop.) Simply send a blank disk, a
self stamped and addressed return disk mailer, and a check or

By the way, since Stitchmeister Demo is the first version that I
wrote, not only are some of the additional features of
stitchmeister missing, but so are a lot of error traps, so if you
find a way to crash it, just don't keep doing what ever it was
that caused the crash!
USING STITCHMEISTER
Stitchmeister uses the Standard GEM drop down menus, from which the
commands are selected. Most commands require the clicking of the
mouse button to return to the menu, once their task is complete.

The usual bruhaha title screen.
DESK ACCESSORIES
Stitchmeister allows you access to all of your .ACCs.Make
sure you close each .ACC when you are done with it, as they will
operate simultaneously with stitchmeister, and can do odd things
to the screen updates.
FILE MENU
LOAD SCREEN
Selects and loads, a .NEO (or any neochrome compatible file)
file from disk to the workscreen. It does not alter the current
color palette.
UPDATE COLOR
Sets the current palette to the palette of the last loaded
.NEO file.
QUIT
It's pretty self explanatory :-)
PRINTER MENU
PRINT
Prints out a selected stamp (see stamp menu)as a counted
cross-stitch pattern. Every 10 lines a one line copyright message
is inserted into the pattern, to prevent commercial use.
COMPRESS TEXT
Sets the text mode of a Panasonic KX-P1090 to horizontally
compressed text. To allow more information per page than a
standard printout.
SHORT TEXT
Sets the text mode of a Panasonic KX-P1090 to vertically
compressed text. I believe that the text adjustment commands are
the same for EPSON printers, as the KX-P1090 is supposed to be
"EPSON compatible" (That's what I tell it every time I find yet
another Atari software package that won't work with it)
SEND TEXT
Asks for, and then sends text to the printer. This is for
adding comments, such as palette info to the printout.
SEND CHAR
Asks for the decimal value of an ascii character. It then
places that character in a string which is sent to the printer
with SEND RETURN. This is for setting the print modes on printers
other than the KX-P1090. See your printer manual for more
details.
SEND RETURN
Sends the string created with SEND CHAR to the printer,
followed by a return.
STAMP
Instead of simply printing an entire screen as a pattern,
Stitchmeister creates stamps, or reduced images of the screen.
(320x200 is a LOT of stitches) The size of a stamp is determined
by the step. The step is the amount of reduction applied to the
screen to produce a stamp. (eg. a step of 6 produces a stamp 1/6
the size of the screen, while a step of 1 will produce a stamp of
the entire screen) Stitchmeister demo does not check the step
settings of individual stamps, so it is important that when
printing a stamp, the step is set the same as when the stamp was
cut or reduced.
SET STEP
Displays the current step rate, and asks for a new one. The
default step is 5.
REDUCE IMAGE
Creates a stamp by reducing the current screen to a stamp at
the current step rate. When a stamp is created, Stitchmeister
will ask for a number by which the stamp may be identified, this
number must be between 0 and 100. The size of the stamps will
determine the limit of stamps that can be created.
SHOW STAMP
Displays the stamps. Move the mouse up and down to find the
stamp you are looking for.
CUT STAMP
Allows a stamp to be cut from a picture. Select the stamp
number, and then place the rectangle in position and click.
